We got our basement window! LOVE IT!

I had a "LOT" of fun tonight at lot 308.  :)  Enjoy!
Yes!  New House! New House!  Yes!

They put some type of cardboard paper like stuff and taped it in where the post under the garage beam is.

I've never seen a more beautiful pile of cardboard boxes of HVAC stuff in my life! Oh Sweet Jesus!

Here's the basement window.  Can I get an "Amen"?   Best decision EVER.

Fluffy Bubbly insulation stuff.

The back of the walkout basement.  Who wouldn't want a window there?

And...they fixed the flashing?  I'm not sure.  Everything I read about flashing said not to cover the nails.  Does anyone know?

An underneath peek.

It looks like the sides still overlap the bottom but...is it ok for it to cover the nails on the bottom?  Does it matter?  I don't want any water damming up if it happens to get under the siding and run down the wall.
UPDATE:  The sides do NOT overlap the bottom.  I got inside and checked it out.  Not happy.

  1. I like the photo work there, but jealous of the foam insulation!

I love This Old House, they make it look super easy. They did cover the top nails with the flashing in this video:

  3. Hey Thomas,
Thanks for the video. I thought it would make me feel better but it didn't. I'm pretty sure they didn't take the window out and reinstall it with the flashing actually making contact with the seal. If you look close you (at least when I zoom in) it looks like all they did was tape the shiny flashing up on the outside wall. So there isn't anything protecting directly underneath the window on the sill. :( What should I do? What would you do?

    1. I would raise true concern again with the PM. It is valid, I would be uncomfortable letting it go, and I would be thinking about it in the future. See what the PM says and if you need to talk with the SR. If all else fails you could show the pictures to a local window installer or even talk with the county inspector for that matter.

All things being said I think that it is something Ryan should and ideally will acomidate you on in order to make things right.

    2. Yes...Yes. I think you are right. I don't think it's Ryan...I think it's the workers. The PM thinks it's fixed but he's not always on the site. I'm calling tonight to "officially" get in the house to take photos and check things out. I don't want to get in trouble for going in without them....I'm a scaredy cat.

  9. It’s nice to see the basement window is looking great and secured! The latter is one aspect we should be paying extra attention to. If you don’t mind, I’d like to suggest putting some security bars over yours, since it isn’t shatter-proof glass, is it? Our basement window is only yet to arrive, by the way. -->Rodney

  10. Thanks for the suggestion. We have a built in room in the basement with a locked door to access to the rest of the house. In terms of security, we feel that it is pretty secure....plus we have several dogs that are ready to go nuts on strangers that might try to get in. We have thought of getting a couple of alarms too...but we didn't think of security bars....definitely something to consider. :)
