Adding to the driveway?

Has anyone added a little width (like the size of a car) to their driveway?  I was just wondering.  I asked my PM about it and he gave me the number of the Asphalt guy.  He said I could just call and talk/pay him.  I called him and he never got back to me.  I hate calling someone just to force them to take my money.  Anyways....the PM said he would say something to him but they've poured the first coats of the asphalt and there is nothing extra on the side.  :(   I was thinking, if it didn't cost too much, that I would add it so that friends/family didn't have to park in the street.
If you have added asphalt, does anyone have any idea of the cost for it?  Thanks for you help!

By the way, the siding was delivered and they were on stilts last night mudding the ceilings. I hope to show you some pics of that this week!

  1. If they have already poured it, the part they would add would not match the original pour.

    1. Maybe that's not the case with asphalt. We are getting concrete for our driveway and that's what I was thinking of.

  2. We are planning on getting extra driveway (and our PM recommended it). Got the number of the asphalt guys and was told to call them before they do the initial pour. No clue how much it would cost. My impression is that they do an initial pour, and then come back through later on and do a final pour (but I may be way off on this - anyone?). Maybe you could still get some extra now before they do the final pour?

  3. We are having 1 foot added to the side of the driveway just to make it wide enough that you don't have to walk in the grass, Currently we have the initial asphalt pour done (I think its the binder coat) and they are just going to come back and add to it when they are doing another set of houses in the neighborhood. If you can get them to come do that when they are already going to be there the price will be much more reasonable than it will be if they have to load up all of the stuff on a truck and bring it. Asphalt driveways take several seperate heavy machines to put down. When they come back to do the final coat (typically 4-6 months after we moved in according to the PM) you won't be able to tell where the add on was done since the top layer will be done all at the same time.

  4. you can have it done, but you have to work it out with the concrete/asphalt guy directly. We have concrete and worked a side deal with the concrete guy to extend driveway to edge of garage on both sides. Doing so adds about 2' on both sides. That extra 4' is HUGE! highly recommend to everyone. For a reference, we paid $300 on the side.

    1. Definitely want to do this. Waiting for the concrete guy to call me back with an estimate. Thanks for sharing what you paid for it.

  5. We hope to add to ours. We know that it won't match perfectly, but we want the extra space more than I care about it matching. Our PM would not allow us to contact the concrete guy to add more during the build. He's very "by the book" but he was great to work with and is still coming through for us, so I won't complain. We had a three car wide driveway at the last house and we loved it.

  6. Not sure if it's the same asphalt company our pan uses (also in Pgh), but the guy here never called me back. I talked to him a few months ago and he basically said just to flag them down when I see them working in the neighborhood. They did the first coat before we moved in and then came back to do some touch-up work in March or April (there was a section near the sidewalk that had dipped). Our PM said they won't be doing the final coat until the fall. We don't have a ton of space to widen, so I was only looking at about 18".
